Davey 10

Slow progress but I have added a few things... fixed errors that occurred when the player went off screen and there was no new screen to load in that direction, added an updated music and audio effects sub system and have started to figure out assets for both of those, and finally added health and damage amounts - a single hit no longer kills Davey!

Davey 9

Adds:
  • Jet pack (always on for now - this will be a collected item)
  • Some additional screens exploring a new area type (very far from final)
  • Dev console (press ~ to enter, ESC to exit, enter "help" for list of commands - not much there yet)

  • Probably other things I've forgotten

Last night I uninstalled something called "Buy HP products" that my printer had automatically installed. It was 157MB. As a person who came of age in the 1980's, when real, useful apps fit on a 5.25" floppy disk (1.2MB), I find this disturbing.

Davey 7 - New builds!

New Windows and Mac OS builds available!



Mac users also get a bonus in the form of a early build of the Davey Edit application. This allows easy editing of screens. Beware - it's even more buggy than the game is at this point. ;-)

The new menu system in the game has commands for Saving and Loading but these currently do not work - next big thing to do.

Both of these are installer packages which will create a Davey folder with the application inside of it:

On Windows the exe version will create a Davey menu group and menu item for you to launch the application easily.

Mac: http://metasushi.com/software/releases/Davey5.mac.zip
On Mac, unpack the ZIP file then run the PKG file within it. This will install the game to Applications/Davey.

Editor
There is a bug in the editor which will be somewhat annoying if you try to create any screens, but it has a simple work around. When switching focus to the large screen view, always click on the titlebar rather than inside the window. This will prevent randomly placed objects from showing up.

Davey 6 - Editor 2

I've split the data files into an INFO file and SCREENS file - the INFO file has to be edited by hand, and is the place where we put things like tile definitions, NPC definitions, and scripts. The SCREENS file contains the map data and is the most tedious to edit.

Getting the editor to correctly rewrite the INFO section of the map was proving to be time consuming after I had added several features (scripts among them :D) and hadn't bothered to update the SaveMap() engine routine, leading the editor to be far out of sync. Since the editor didn't have support for editing the INFO section anyway, moving it into two separate files fixed most of the bugs and got me moving again.

I think that's a critical thing on this project - just make progress. Do the correct amount and nothing more. A good philosophy I think.

FoodLog

Just started a little food log application. It will let you search for food by brand name, then keep track of your daily caloric intake. It needs some work still but it's already quite functional. The API I'm using it free and provided by http://www.fatsecret.com/.



Here I've entered the name of a food, but I don't know what it's calories or other details are, so I click Find.


I'm presented with search results which I can then use to go back to the Add Entry form by clicking Add next to a search result.


Back at the Add Entry form, the details have all been filled in for me, so all I have to do is correct the Quantity then hit Add and it goes into my log.
